Thanks for your interest! Here's a quick FAQ for future owners of a coffee shop or mobile coffee bar
Who are we looking for?
We offer the ultimate coffee experience in each African country. We warmly welcome likeminded, ambitious entrepreneurs – real go-getters who value a more equitable world, coffee flavors, quality and hospitality. Preferable with experience in running a coffee shop or related business. If not, don't worry, our training and coaching program will set you up in no-time!
What skills and resources do I need?
We welcome capital investments but these are not a must from the beginning. Our various coffee shop formats, including mobile coffee bars, and a flexible co-ownership (franchise) structure allows slow buy-in for some of our locations.
A strong local network, creative skills and (financial) management skills are a plus!
Where will the coffee shops be located?
When someone's goal is to start a coffee shop, location may be the sole driver of profitability or the reason for going out of business. In contrast, Crowns Coffee is a brand and a vision for a Pan-African specialty coffee culture, celebrating local ownership. The combination of our multi-channel marketing, our online and offline presence, and the various café formats tested in various types of locations, will significantly increase the chances of profitability for each location.
In each capital city we are opening a flagship, large format coffee shop and several small format coffee shops and mobile coffee bars. Depending on the exact location, we will either design a calm or vibrant in-cafe space, a quick and smooth grab-and-go experience, or a friendly street corner spot for a mobile coffee bar.
For example, in Cocodi and Zone 4 in Abidjan, or in Osu in Accra and Lekki in Lagos, we will go full geek-mode, offering extensive filter coffee menus and tastings, hosting regular music events and art exhibitions. Campus-based locations at the University of Lagos, Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abijdan or the University of Ghana will host debates, workshops and exhibitions, offering friendly student prices for a smaller variety of beans. The coffee shop concepts will also adapt to the residential neighborhoods, depending on their economic profiles.
We are actively assessing different types of locations:- The “going-out" neighborhoods
- The business districts
- The uptown commercial areas and expensive residential neighborhoods
- The "regular" residential neighborhoods, based on income profile
- The shopping malls
- The office areas
- The transport hubs
- The special venues: universities, hospitals, art galleries, etc.
Do I have (enough) experience in brewing, serving and promoting specialty coffee?
Absolutely! Our ambition is to meet African coffee drinkers (or soon to be coffee drinkers) in their current place along the coffee journey. Consumption in Africa is growing fast. Most consumers prefer instant or pre-ground beans brewed at home in a French-press or filter coffee machine. Our coffee shops should not scare them! We aim to offer gradual improvements in their coffee habits. As a specialty coffee entrepreneur you will be trained on various aspects, from bean to cup. It takes 3 minutes for a pour-over and we believe that's all it takes to start! The right beans, grinder and machines will be there to support along the way and you will have enough time to discover their potential.
What are the next steps?
We are early on our roadmap. After a first conversation we will assess together how to proceed. Next steps involve sharing of information from both sides, assessing the potential ownership and governance model and hitting the ground running after that!
Can you tell me more about the coffee shop?
Sure: we aim to build coffee shops fostering a young community, looking for the best coffee and believing in a radically better future
The moodboard: clean, simple, modern design with discreet local elements (e.g. high-end materials); music & events (e.g. boiler room).
Vibrant online presence: with one account for all locations.
As cultural hubs the coffee shops are where guests can meet and work, get inspired, learn together, participate in events such as music evenings, talks, etc.
Crowns Coffee is inclusive to low income consumers (e.g. through concepts dedicated to non-central locations, medium/large cities, mobile coffee bars with two price options (regular / low), up to consumers’ choice).
We are focused on the coffee sector’s renaissance and on the country’s farmers and workers, through a locally integrated fair value chain. As such, the coffee shops are a gateway to the amazing coffee sector in each country. Our close relationships with farmers will open up opportunities for visits and even tourism!
